Postcards from Isla · Day 53

Maybe it shows we aren’t as different as we thought

Two different temples with two different religions yet looked so similar. Maybe it shows we aren’t as different as we thought 🤷‍♀️?

The first one was a Buddhist temple called Borobudur. It was built in the 8th century for a place for Buddhists to adhere to their teachings. We got to change into some cool thatch sandals (andddd my flip flops broke so it was nice because we could keep them). It consisted of 10 levels, each with a specific meaning to ultimately reach nirvana. It is crazy to me how Buddhism has a meaning for everything. Not one rock or amount of something is random, it all has a purpose in the circle of life. The walls were covered in carved stories. If you do good things you get good things in return and well if you don’t, you get karma.

The next one was a Hindu temple called Prambanan. It had similar structures and was built out of the same rock. But each structure was independent of each other instead of being one. And the weather felt way better 😆.

I actually was feeling sick last night and this morning (I guess it was bound to happen at some point) and was scared that I wouldn’t be able to go see the temples. Luckily it wasn’t as bad as the 3 others who got food poisoning from pizza 😬.

We were actually wandering around awhile to find lunch since all the places we stopped at just had their pre-cooked food sitting out in the sun for who knows how long. So we played it safe and went back to the place we went to yesterday.

Karaoked in the car on the way back with Norwegian songs, 2010s bangers, and ABBA. Had some sort of chicken and rice dish with a double boiled egg and spicy jackfruit for dinner, 5/10. Then we met a group of Indonesian university students that wanted to practice English so we had a nice 5 minute conversation.
