Postcards from Isla · Day 46

It’s so far the cutest town I’ve been in

It was so funny because everyone was ACTUALLY excited for the 3 hour bus ride today. Just time to sit down, look outside, and most of all: take a good nap. In fact, people were hoping for traffic so it would be even longer 😆. Even at folkehøgskole I like the long bus rides haha.

The drive was mountainous with windy roads. We stopped for a break at an oyster farm in a lagoon. Later we stopped at a marble statue shop to take a look around. It also started raining at one point (it is typhoon season after all), but luckily it didn’t affect us.

After arriving in Hoi An (known as the city of lanterns), we went to a lantern workshop (yes, how fitting). It was so cool, I got to pick a fabric and then a lady showed us how to stretch the fabric and glue onto the wooden frame. After went to a place for lunch and I got beef pho.

Then got a tour of Hoi An. Saw a house on the river that was over 200 years old and had been through many many floods. Then saw a temple which primarily worshipped the sea goddess. There were incense spirals hanging from the ceiling with prayers. The incense was said to burn for over a month and then the prayer would be answered! People even write their address on it so the god knows where to deliver the prayers.

Got to see the street lit up at night with hundreds of paper lanterns hanging from trees. It was very touristy at night but the tour guide said that it was very calm in the morning. It’s so far the cutest town I’ve been in.

Finally, I went to a tailor! I at first hesitated when I heard that it was going to be over $100 for a custom pair of silk pjs. My brain instantly blocked it. But the more I walked around, the more I thought about the opportunity (once in a lifetime). So I talked to my mom about whether it was worth it or not and she was nice enough to get them for me as an early Christmas present (I talked about getting them before the trip so I think she knew, thanks mom ❤️).

I didn’t realize it until I got in but I was actually so excited to pick out my own fabric, design, and get my own measurements. I can’t wait to see how it turns out tomorrow, I hope I like it🤞.
