Postcards from Isla · Day 40

A new day. A new place. A new feel.

A new day. A new place. A new feel. Day 1 in Ha Noi! Woke up early this morning to catch a flight to Vietnam. Would it be completely different than Malaysia? Similar? I wasn’t sure.

The Kuala Lumpur airport had a layout where the security check was right at the boarding gate. So that means I had to dump out my drinks I got in the airport before getting on plane 😢. I got food with some others at a cafe but the beef rice bowl was not good at all…

The flight had a few turbulence scares (you know, the feeling of dropping out of thin air) but hey we survived, that’s all that matters.

In Ha Noi, we met with the tour guide and got on a bus to the city itself. His name was Buffalo and he was telling us some facts about the city and Vietnam as a whole.

Our hostel is located in the old quarter so we have access to a lot of shops and food vendors. It is a very touristy section of town. But, it’s not only that. It’s also full of countless motorbikes. Moving motorbikes charging towards you at full speed as you try to cross the road 😟.

The tour guide said that people don’t buy a motorbike, they buy a horn, and the motorbike just comes with it for free 😂. In other words, they use their horns religiously (as I write this I am constantly hearing beeping from outside the window). I bet you can only imagine how it was for a group of 20+ people trying to navigate the hodge-podge of vehicles. A gamble is what it was. 😬

I saw a lot of tourists walking around the street. It must be a popular spot to visit because of all the shops and hustle and bustle.

There was a place just 5 mins from the hostel that had supposedly the best Pho in Ha Noi. You walk in, hand them the money, and they prepare you a bowl within seconds. It was so simple but so well done.

I was super tired after that so I decided to head back to the hostel and check out the pool. It may as well have been Sunday swimming (an event where we jump in the ocean every Sunday at the folkehøgskole) because the water was freezingggg. But still fun!
