Postcards from Isla · Day 29

I figured I would go through a typical week here

Wednesdays aren’t too eventful at school. We have trip planning meetings, choir rehearsal, cleaning/chores, and life reflection. Since I have no pictures I figured I would go through a typical week here at folkehøgskole for those that are curious.

Weekdays: breakfast is at 7:45, lunch is at 11:15, dinner is at 3, and kveldsmat (evening snack) is at 7. (ps: the food is amazing here).

Monday-Friday: Word of the day at 8:30 (a teacher’s life experience, something inspirational, a video etc). Starts the day off on a positive note.

Monday, Wednesday, Saturday: chores which we do in free time (we get assigned a duty each week such as corridor cleaning, kitchen duty, or reception upkeep…)

Monday, Tuesday: Elective days! Monday has a morning elective until lunch. In the afternoon we have a meeting going over all activities for the week. Tuesday is either one full day elective or two half day electives. The ones I have are cliff jumping/canoeing, and Topptur which is full day hiking trips. The term is for 3 weeks, we have 3 total terms all with different electives.

Wednesday: what I said above ⬆️. Youth group takes place at 8. Very chill and not mandatory at all.

Thursday, Friday: These are the days when we meet with our lines (mine is culinary). Each week is a different topic such as mushroom foraging, bread baking, lobster fishing, outdoor cooking etc… At 8 is Friday-fun which is organized by the stipps (student leaders).

Saturday: Breakfast is at 8:30 and then we have Saturday-seminar until 1 which is just a certain activity related to our year. First one was exploring Ålesund, next was travel preparation, and then was introduction to school musical (different each week). Then one of the lines comes up with a social activity at 8 for everyone to attend.

Sunday: Brunch is at 10:30 (extended food selection) and then Sunday-bathing is at 1. Sunday movie night takes place at 8 (we vote for the movie). I can fill the rest of the day however I want.

Some days can feel quite busy and others can be way very chill. Overall, it’s key to find a healthy balance of social and alone time!
