Postcards from Isla · Day 6

Hvor kommer boblene fra?

The school went to town today to get a tour of Ålesund. But it can’t be a proper tour without first starting at the Aksla viewpoint of the city. Which include 418 stairs 🤯.

The tour guide seemed very passionate about Ålesund and definitely had some competitiveness regarding neighboring towns (it was fun to see). He also seemed to think there were a little too much tourists 😳. He spent a lot of time talking about the history of the city including the fire that burned over 800 homes. Luckily the town rebuilt and used renowned architect to help. I could understand what he said thanks to a fellow student that was translating for me.

I knew I couldn’t visit Ålesund and not get a drink so I stopped at Dråpe which means «Droplet» and got a chai. It had literal chili powder and I was wondering «Oh maybe this is what Norwegian chai tastes like?» but no they said it was not normal.

At the school, there were some students playing some volleyball for fun and I was not planning to join since I am not good at all. But my friend who didn’t know how to play either, said that we should just give it a try. Luckily I listened to her and joined in on the game. Even though I failed every serve, I still had a good time 😂.

Later in the evening we ate pølse i brød which was good, I liked the onions on top. Gave me a little bit more hope for food (better than liver paste and mackerel 😃). Jokes aside, I am thrilled I get to try so many new things.

Made mugs later in the night and I used a sentence that is very near to my heart. It’s the first Norwegian sentence I made myself 🥹. «Hvor kommer boblene fra?» «Where are the bubbles coming from? Yeah— random, I know. But I guess reading candy wrapper slogans can actually help you learn some words (the word I learned was bubble).
