A Norwegian fishing village below steep mountains

In development

You’ve decided. Now what?

The Playbook is the step-by-step for families who are past the question of whether, and now facing the question of how.

The moment this is for

The overwhelm arrives right after the decision.

You have read the guide. You have been through the schools. Your kid is genuinely excited — and now there are eighty options, a Norwegian application portal, a residence permit, and a quota you do not understand.

That is the gap the Playbook fills. Not what a folk school is. What you personally do next, in what order, by when.

What it will cover

Four things, and they are the four that matter.

01

Narrowing eighty down to three

The filters that actually predict a good year — language expectations, how much the school travels, how international the intake is, whether the subject line suits your kid.

02

The application, step by step

One national portal, and it does have an English mode. Where families lose time, what schools weigh, and how to write a motivation letter — which matters far more than grades.

03

Visa and residence permit

The student residence permit, the documents, the financial requirement, and the practical cutoff. Processing can take one to three months, which sets the real deadline.

04

The timeline that beats the quota

Applications open around 1 October, offers begin mid-November, and it runs first come first served until schools are full. Working backwards from that is the whole game.

Honestly

It isn’t finished, and we won’t pretend otherwise.

Parts of the Playbook depend on answers only the schools can give — how many non-European places each one has left, and exactly how much Norwegian they expect. We are asking them in writing rather than guessing from websites.

When it is ready, the people on this list hear first. Until then the Starter Kit covers the ground you need to shortlist.
